South Africa praises Modi political will for sanitation success
South African Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pamela Tshwete, attending the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention (MGISC) in Delhi said she was taking away a lot from the huge convention where countries shared their challenges as well as best practices. She emphasized the most important lesson learned was a strong political will demonstrated by India's Prime Minister and her country with similar challenges was now being ably led in a similar direction by the new President Cyril Ramaphosa. Claiming Mahatma Gandhi who spent 21 years in South Africa to be their icon and leader, the Minister who visited India for the first time said she felt at home in India. She sees many similarities between South Africa and India, particularly because of the large Indian Diaspora in her country, adding that most people in Durban city were now Indians! The Diaspora is the bedrock of a firm and growing relationship, the Minister said. She said she will share back home all she had witnessed and learned from the Clean India Campaign. As a developing country with significant challenges, yet India had demonstrated to the world that sanitation goals were achievable, said the South African Minister.
