Japan says sanitation goals achievable, says MGISC unprecedented gathering
Japan State Minister of the Environment and Cabinet Office Tadahiko ITO said the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention (MGISC) hosted by India was an unprecedented effort by India and UN agencies to bring together countries to openly share problems and best practices. Calling sanitation issue a stark reality and solutions being difficult, the Japanese Minister quoted the Mahatma by saying that change happens when people and governments are determined. The Minister strongly believes that the world could achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal number 6 by 2030. The Japanese Minister said he was privileged to attend MGISC and learn that Gandhi considered sanitation and cleanliness more important than freedom, and believed that internal cleanliness was paramount. He assured that Japan would cooperate on Clean India campaign as best as it can. Minister ITO said he had never attended an amazing convention of the like of MGISC. He pointed out that Japan was working with a lot of African countries on Africa Clean City platform. Also, Japanese companies making modern toilets and particularly those with sludge management technologies were already working in India and Africa and developing countries.
