Dr Shafique Keshavjee, a thoracic surgeon of Indian origin who has years of experience at the forefront of innovative research into lung transplantation, saved a young mother`s life with what is believed to be the world`s first radical procedure. elissa Benoit, 32, was born with cystic fibrosis and had developed a rampaging lung infection that spread throughout her body. Dr Keshavjee that for the first time ever, they had a patient in our intensive care with no longs. In fact she technically was on an artificial lung, an artificial heart and an artificial kidney for six days."Keshavjee and his team of 13-member surgeons and specialists kept Benoit alive by the state-of-the art technology that oxygenated and circulated her blood until donor organs become available.
