Mercury plummeted in Kashmir Valley on January 1 after a slightrespite for few days,dropping further below the freezing point withKargil recording a new low of minus 15.8 degrees Celsius this season.Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimumtemperature of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius, down by almost three degreesfrom the previous night`s minus 2 degrees Celsius. The minimumtemperature in the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg settled at minus 3.4degrees Celsius. The MeT department has forecast that a fresh westerndisturbance was likely to affect the state from January 3 onwards.Meanwhile, Delhi in December 2014 witnessed its foggiest December in15 years. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) was fogged outfor a total of 76 hours — 13 nights and mornings. December witnessedthe third highest dense CAT III fog hours ever since analysis of datastarted in 1981.
