Seattle Sikhs raise over Rs 10 m |
Sikhs in the post 9/11 US have had to face many incidents of violence and prejudice due to ignorance about their faith, appearance and dress, especially turban, forcing the community to take proactive steps to differentiate themselves from Muslims. This has led to the launching of the National Sikh Campaign (NSC) in the US for which Sikhs in Seattle have raised over 1 crore for a national TV advertisement campaign. NSC senior adviser and chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education Rajwant Singh said that 200 Sikhs had come together to raise funds for the media initiative. An amount of $1,50,000 was raised by the audience at an evening gala attended by the community members from various parts of the Seattle suburbs and others who had come from all the way from Salem, Oregon and Salt Lake City, Utah. Awareness to be raised, sikhs should not be mistaken as muslims. There is huge difference between attackers & protectors. A social media drive is important. The NSC is planning similar fund-raisers in Fresno, New York, Yuba City and many other cities.
