President refers to Jan Sangh icons |
In a unique mention in the President`s address to Indian Parliament for the opening of budget session, the Constitutional head of India referred to those considered icons by the current ruling party. With voices of protests against the land acquisition ordinance growing stronger, the government of India said it had suitably refined the law to minimize certain procedural difficulties in acquisition of land for critical public projects even as farmers` interest remained paramount. Address by President Pranab Mukherjee to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament was a sharp departure from the past, inasmuch as he included references to Jan Sangh leaders Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Deendayal Upadhyaya and former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee while omitting references to the Nehru-Gandhi family. The President invoked Vajpayee on how poverty impacts economy and Syama Prasad Mookerjee when he spoke about the country`s rich spiritual and civilizational heritage.
