The Planning Commission of India has been revamped and rechristened asthe NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog. The neworganization will have a multi-tiered structure including a governingcouncil that comprises the chief ministers of all states andlieutenant governors of union territories. To be chaired by PrimeMinister Narendra Modi, the revamped institution will serve as agovernment `think tank` with the mandate to provide strategic andtechnical advice on issues of “national and international importance”to the Centre and states. Prime Minister Modi said it will provide keyinputs on various policy matters. The body celebrates India`sdiversity & plurality and will have a CEO and a Vice Chairperson, tobe appointed by the Prime Minister, in addition to some full-timemembers and two part-time members, while four union ministers wouldserve as ex-officio members.
