Nepal quake toll could be 10,000 |
Nepal`s devastating earthquake could end up claiming 10,000 lives in that country and 100 or more in India, according to officials quoted in various media reports. The revelation has been that experts knew the disaster was coming. Just a week ago, about 50 earthquake and social scientists from around the world had come to Kathmandu to get the area to prepare better for a big earthquake. Seismologist James Jackson, head of the earth sciences department at the University of Cambridge in England said it was sort of a nightmare waiting to happen. He walked through that very area where that earthquake started. USGS seismologist David Wald said a Kathmandu earthquake was long been feared, not just because of the natural seismic fault, but because of the local, more human conditions that made it worse. The consequences are very much man-made. It is the fifth significant quake there in the last 205 years, including the massive 1934 one. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 26 reached out to the victims and said India would make all possible efforts to help the Nepalese people and wipe their tears in this hour of crisis. India`s efforts gelled with its age-old ethos of `Seva Parmo Dharma` (service is our principle duty). Modi reminded he had witnessed the devastation caused by the earthquake in Kutch (Gujarat) on January 26, 2001.
