Nehru snooped on Netaji kin |
The Congress is fighting hard a charge that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru subjected the kin of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose to intense surveillance for more than two decades. BJP made full political use of two declassified files of the Intelligence Bureau that point to Nehru ordering full snooping of Bose`s nephews because Nehru feared that the legendary freedom fighter might still return after an air crash in Taiwan. Congress alleged the reports were part of the Modi government sinister propaganda of selective leaks and half-truths to malign national icons. Reports said that the IB files, declassified by the Modi government, show that the Nehru regime mounted an aggressive surveillance on Bose`s family members from 1948 till at least 1968. Two residences of the Bose family in Kolkata — Woodburn Park and 38/2 Elgin Road – were under surveillance. IB operatives intercepted all letters written by Bose`s family members, and they were trailed whenever they stepped out. There is also evidence to show IB personnel shadowed the siblings when they traveled out of Kolkata and abroad.
