Minister sorry for Sonia racist jibe |
BJP`s Union Minister for MSME Giriraj Singh was reprimanded by his own party, particularly BJP President Amit Shah, on April 1 as Singh hurled a racist insult directed at the Congress. Giriraj later apologized for having asked whether the Congress Party would have agreed to be led by Sonia Gandhi if she wasn`t white-skinned and had, instead, been a black-skinned Nigerian. The remarks sparked a diplomatic row as the Nigerian Deputy High Commissioner issued a demarche. Singh was condemned by the political class and women`s groups with the Congress asking the Prime Minister to dismiss him. Giriraj made the comments in Hajipur, headquarters of Vaishali district, around 20 km north of Patna. He also mocked Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi`s absence from the Political scene, comparing it with the missing Malaysian airliner.
