Maruti to use inland waterways |
Maruti Suzuki India Limited has planned to execute a first of its kind project for transportation of vehicles using inland waterways. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd for transportation of cars through inland vessels. The cost of transportation through water in India approximates to 50 paise a kilometre, which is nearly half of what is incurred through rail transportation and a third of what it costs by road. Talking about inland waterways, we have rivers, lakes, canals, creeks, backwaters and others, which extend to about 14,500km overall. Out of the 14,500km, mechanised crafts can use 5,200km of the rivers and 4,000km of canals. All domestic freight transport presently takes place through land because of lack of infrastructure.
