Kolkata`s air more toxic than Delhi`s |
In India, Kolkata`s air was six times more toxic than the permissible limit set by the Central Pollution Control Board in terms of PM2.5 count over the past few days, surpassing the ambient air quality of even New Delhi. On December 23 , the city`s PM2.5 count surpassed that of Delhi`s by 100. Doctors have warned people against stepping out early in the morning when concentration of diesel exhaust hangs low in the air. They should go for walks in the evening. The high concentration of diesel vehicles in Kolkata has turned the city into a gas chamber and the authorities need to immediately adopt stringent measures like those in Delhi to counter the menace, say environmentalists.
