Curry is now so popular in Japan that it is almost revered as the country`s national food. Originating in India, the dish came to Japan via Europe and took on its own distinct local flavor. The dish is a favorite with kids and is often a mandatory menu item in school lunches.More than 2,000 restaurants throughout Japan serve only Indian food. But while these are operated by Indians, Bangladeshis, Nepalis and Pakistanis, the curry food market is dominated by Japanese food makers. The Japanese even take pride in preparing curry at home. The `ethnic restaurant` category comprises of Indian, Thai and other Asian cuisines.There are many chains of curry shops in Japan, and each of these own 200 to 500 stores all over Japan. Such places offer Japanese curry, but their selling point is the Japanese-style Indian curry.
