Indian Assembly election results |
Assembly election results of five states of Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry were declared on May 19, 2016. The highlights are : BJP is on its way to be a true Pan-India party following its win in Assam . The Congress loses its two states of Assam and Kerala. Thus, BJP has governments in 9 states and shares power in 4 states while the Congress is in power only in 6 out of 29 states. Rahul Gandhi becomes irrelevant. Local leadership matters. BJP learns from its drubbings in Delhi and Bihar assemblies by choosing local leader in Assam. West Bengal proves arithmetic wrong; Rahul`s attempt to do a Bihar in West Bengal by joining hands with the Left fails. Most of all, corruption isn`t the only issue as Mamata Bannerjee wins despite one or two scams . Similarly, anti-incumbency isn`t universal. While Mamata ducks the anti-incumbency in West Bengal and Jayalalitha in Tamil Nadu, the Congress loses Assam and Kerala. Pudducherry also suffers from incombency and chooses Congress.
