GST Bill has tough battle in RS |
The Bill to amend India`s Constitution to introduce the much-debated goods and services tax passed the easier hurdle in Lok Sabha on May 6 with support from some regional parties beefing up the numbers of the ruling benches. But it faces an uphill battle in Rajya Sabha. The Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill got the support of 352 members, while 37 votes against it. The main-opposition, Congress, stuck to its demand for referring the Bill to the standing committee and walked out of the Lok Sabha, The government is on tenterhooks with numbers in Rajya Sabha heavily tilted against it. The support from Trinamool Congress, Biju Janata Dal and Samajwadi Party came as a breather, but all combined have a strength of only 34 in Rajya Sabha. The government will be short of the required numbers by a huge margin and may now have to reach out to other important groups like Bahajun Samaj Party.
