Good rains in Delhi |
After witnessing a 96% rain deficit in January and February, Delhi , capital of India, has received a windfall with 12.9mm rain recorded in the first 11 days of March 2016 against a monthly normal of 15.9mm. Between 8.30am and 8.30pm on Friday, the Safdarjung observatory recorded 6.7mm rain with the promise of more to come over the next two days. B P Yadav, director of India Meterological Department (IMD), said a western disturbance (WD), as an upper air cyclonic circulation, was lying over Afghanistan and the neighbouring areas and this resulted in the widespread rain over northwest India. WD will bring rain and snowfall at most places over the western Himalayan region till March 13. Rain and thundershowers will also occur at most places over the plains of northwest India during the same period. Central India will be affected a little later where some places will witness rain and thundershowers from March 12 to 14. Another WD is expected on March 18 which is not as strong as the current one and there is no consensus on whether it will bring rain to Delhi. An official said a study of most extended range forecast models for March 19 to 28 does not show any significant WD moving across the plains and thus chances of any significant rainfall over Delhi has been ruled out.
