Delhi slips to 6th, Mum No.1 |
India`s industrial town of Mumbai topped the list among 21 big cities in a survey on the capability of a city administration to deliver better quality of life over the medium and long term. While the maximum city moved eight places from last year and Thiruvananthapuram retained the second position, Delhi slipped to sixth from five in 2014. Bhubaneswar, which was ranked number one in the smart cities contest recently, came 18th in the list. The Annual Survey of India’s City-Systems by Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy covered 18 states. According to the report, all 21 cities had very low scores when compared with cities such as London and New York, indicating the need to push major reforms in municipal governance as pressure increases on major urban centres. Meanwhile, there is going to be a shortage of power in the coming summer in Delhi. Delhi Transco Limited warned of outages this summer as critical capital projects had not taken off due to lack of sufficient funds. It criticized the two Reliance-backed discoms, BSES Rajdhani (west and south Delhi) and BSES Yamuna (east Delhi), for not paying their dues, and said a serious system failure loomed large this year because essential maintenance on transmission lines had not been possible due financial constraints.
