Delhi farmer suicide rocks Parliament |
Indian Parliament witnessed uproarious sessions in both Houses on August 23 on the issue of a farmer`s death on site in Delhi as the Aam Admi Party (AAP) Chief Minister and his supporters gathered for a farmers rally on April 22nd. The Speaker of the lower House, the Lok Sabha, rejected the Opposition demand for suspension of Question Hour in the Lok Sabha. Rajya Sabha too was adjourned twice briefly over the issue. Both the Houses expressed their concern over the farmer`s suicide. Amid the din, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said the government was ready to discuss the important, serious and urgent issue, even though the House had already discussed the issue of unseasonal rains and hailstorm destroying standing crops. The government was ready to have another debate on the plight of the farmer. Gajendra Singh, a distressed farmer from Dausa in Rajasthan, committed suicide on April 22 by hanging himself from a tree in full public view in the presence of Arvind Kejriwal at the rally. Home Minister Rajnath Singh replied to the debate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government was open to suggestions from political parties on ways to stop the spate of farmer suicides in the country. The PM said the ruling and opposition parties should get together to find a solution to the problem which has been a concern for several years.
