Cong seeks affidavit from MLAs |
West Bengal Pradesh Congress president Adhir Chowdhuri has asked the recently elected 44 MLAs from his party to sign an undertaking that will stop them from defecting to the ruling Trinamool Congress. The Congress has emerged as the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly as the CPM got relegated to the third position. In the "Mamata tsunami" rerun, the Congress has not only managed to add three more seats, but has also increased its vote share from 9.6 per cent to 12 per cent. This way, the Congress, which is dwindling in other states, becomes the main Opposition in the Bengal Assembly after 15 years. But the biggest challenge for the party now is to retain all its MLAs. And in a brainstorming at the party headquarters , the party chief seems to have found a novel way to retain all 44 MLAs.Apprehending that they might cross over to the ruling Trinamool Congress, he has asked them each to sign on affidavits (stamp paper worth Rs 100), promising not to indulge in any kind of anti-party activity and desist from defecting to the ruling Trinamool Congress.
