Canada gets 4 Sikh ministers |
When newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his 30-member Cabinet recently there was reason for Indians to feel proud as the government featured four ministers of Indian origin (all Sikhs, one a woman), one of whom will be the nation`s new Defence Minister. The four Indo-Canadians who made it to the Cabinet: Harjit Sajjan (Defence Minister); Navdeep Bains ( Innovation, Science & Economic Development) ; Amarjeet Sohi ( Infrastructure ) and Bardish Chagger ( Small Business & Tourism). Harjit Sajjan (Defence Minister) served as cop in Afghanistan and Bosnia.He was elected anMP from Vancouver South; a police officer who joined the Army Reserves and became the first Sikh to command a regiment. Sajjan`s family had emigrated to Canada from Punjab when he was five-years-old. The 45-year-old was a decorated Lt. Colonel in the Canadian ArmedForces and has served in Bosnia and three tours in Afghanistan. The two turbaned Sikhs sworn in as Cabinet Ministers in Canada are Navdeep Bains, who played a key role in Mr Trudeau`s election as the Liberal Party leader in 2013, has been awarded with the important cabinet berth.
