BJP heavyweights for Rajya Sabha |
The BJP has intensified its effort to improve quality and strength in the upper house of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha,by nominating 18 candidates for biennial elections from nine states to the Rajya Sabha. On May 28, 2016, BJP first list released included Union ministers M Venkaiah Naidu, Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal, Chaudhary Birender Singh and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. The other candidates are Om Prakash Mathur, Harsh Vardhan Singh, Ram Kumar Verma, Purushottam Rupala, Anil Madhav Dave, Ramvichar Netam and Gopal Narayan Singh. On 30 May 2016, BJP nominated three more heavy weights, that include Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu as candidate from Andhra Pradesh, where he has been assured of ruling TDP’s support, and would field noted journalist M J Akbar from Madhya Pradesh and party vice president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe from Maharashtra for the biennial polls. Party’s general secretary Ram Madhav, whose name was doing rounds as a contender, is not among the six candidates with sources saying he is likely to get a bigger responsibility in the organisation following a rejig, which is expected soon. Other BJP candidates are Vikas Mahatme from Maharashtra, Shiv Pratap Shukla from Uttar Pradesh and Mahesh Poddar from Jharkhand.
