After snagging the top documentary prizes at almost all the major award ceremonies, including the BAFTAS and Grammys, Indo-British director Asif Kapadia’s “Amy” won the coveted Oscar for ‘Best Documentary Feature’ during the 88th Annual Academy Awards, held Feb. 28 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. “Amy,” a documentary exploring the life and tragic demise of late pop star Amy Winehouse, was up against “Cartel Land,” “The Look of Silence,” “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and “Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom.” `Senna` director Kapadia and producer James Gay-Rees accepted the award from “Star Wars’” Daisy Ridley and “Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel. “This film is all about Amy,” Kapadia said onstage. “This is all about showing the world who she really was, not a tabloid persona, the beautiful girl, the amazing soul, funny, intelligent, witty, someone special, someone who needed looking after. The documentary uses previously unseen footage — including interviews from friends, family and colleagues — of the “Back to Black” star, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of 27.
