20 sandalwood smugglers shot |
In the bloodiest attack on sandalwood smugglers in south India, 20 woodcutters engaged by them to bring out the contraband wood from jungles on the border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu were shot dead by a joint team of special police. The alleged encounters took place in the forests of Seshachalam in Chittoor. Most of them were woodcutters from tribal areas in northern Tamil Nadu which border Chittoor, triggering howls of protests in political circles in both the states. APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy said his party would approach the National Human Rights Commission to probe the killings while Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam expressed shock and sought a speedy inquiry.
