Concluding his 3-day State visit to India, Maldives President Mohammed Nasheed sat down for a wide ranging interview with PIO TV Managing Editor Munish Gupta. President Nasheed said many other developing nations including his own looked up to India for creating a new framework and leading the discussions for concluding the global agreement on climate change. The 42-year-old journalist turned politician who himself was imprisoned and tortured before becoming President in November 2008 said he gives a ‘B’ rating to changes in just one year to bring democracy to his country. President Nasheed admits that among the impediments to a positive change in his country is the fact that terrorist outfits from Pakistan and Afghanistan mislead, enroll and train people from his country. The first democratically elected President of Maldives said he wants to and is growing collaboration with India not just on the economic and development front, but also military, surveillance and against terrorism. President Nasheed especially welcomed overseas Indians to visit the Maldives, set up businesses there and said his government would help in that process. The Maldives head of state gave a special welcome to Mr. K N Gupta, India President of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) International, and said he would invite GOPIO to open a chapter in the island nation and work with the successful ‘India Club’ that caters to the 24,000 NRIs in Maldives that make 8 percent of the population.
